Questions UK patients ask

Dental treatment abroad, answered

The questions UK patients ask us most, grouped so you can find yours fast — from safety and savings to trips, brands and aftercare.

Getting started

Is it safe to get dental treatment abroad? +

Yes, provided you choose an accredited clinic and do basic due diligence. The safest clinics hold international accreditation (JCI or ISO), use the same implant and material brands as the UK, and provide a written guarantee plus an aftercare process. Risk comes almost entirely from choosing on price alone rather than checking credentials.

Which country is best for dental treatment for UK patients? +

Turkey ranks first in our atlas for the combination of low cost and high quality, with Antalya offering the densest concentration of JCI-accredited, UK-focused clinics and savings of 60–70%. Hungary and Poland are strong, closer EU options with smaller savings; Portugal is excellent for combining treatment with a holiday but is the priciest of the four.

How much can I save on dental treatment abroad? +

Typical savings range from about 30% in Portugal to 70% in Turkey. A single implant with crown that costs £2,400–£3,400 privately in the UK is around £750–£1,400 in Turkey. The larger the treatment, the bigger the absolute saving — full-arch cases often save £8,000–£15,000 per arch.

Do I need a visa to travel for dental treatment? +

UK passport holders can travel to Turkey visa-free for up to 90 days. Hungary, Poland and Portugal are EU members and also visa-free for short stays. Always check current entry requirements and that your passport has sufficient validity before booking.

Costs and payment

Why is dental treatment so much cheaper abroad? +

The saving is structural, not a quality compromise: lower clinic overheads, lower lab and staff costs, favourable exchange rates and high treatment volume. Leading clinics abroad use the same global implant brands (Straumann, Nobel Biocare, MIS) and CAD/CAM labs as UK practices.

Is the price abroad really all-inclusive? +

At reputable clinics the treatment price usually includes consultation, surgery, abutments and final restorations, and many Turkish clinics also include hotel and airport transfers. Flights are normally separate — budget roughly £80–£300 return from the UK. Always ask for an itemised written quote.

How do I pay, and is a deposit normal? +

A modest deposit to secure your dates is standard; the balance is typically paid in stages at the clinic by card or bank transfer. Avoid clinics that demand large upfront payments before you have a written treatment plan. Keep all receipts and agreements in writing.

Treatment and trips

How many trips abroad will I need? +

Implants and full-arch treatments usually need two trips a few months apart: surgery first, then the final teeth after healing. Veneers and crowns can often be completed in a single 5–7 day visit. Factor return flights for each trip into your budget.

Are the implant brands the same as in the UK? +

At leading clinics, yes. Straumann, Nobel Biocare, MIS and Osstem are global brands used in the UK and abroad alike. A clinic that will not name the brand it places is a warning sign — you should always know what is going into your jaw.

Can I combine treatment with a holiday? +

Absolutely, and many patients do. Antalya and the Algarve in particular pair treatment with genuine recovery time. Just be guided by your clinician on activity after surgery, and avoid swimming or heavy sun exposure immediately after implant placement.

Safety and aftercare

What accreditation should I look for? +

JCI (Joint Commission International) is the global gold standard; ISO 9001/13485 cover quality management and medical devices. In the EU, look for local dental-council registration of the treating dentist. Confirm the dentist is individually registered, not just the clinic.

What if something goes wrong after I get home? +

Choose a clinic with a written guarantee and a UK liaison who can support you remotely. Reputable clinics such as Taki Dent offer a lifetime implant guarantee and a clear remote-support process. Keep your treatment records and register with a UK dentist for routine check-ups between trips.

Does the GDC have guidance on overseas treatment? +

Yes. The General Dental Council publishes guidance for patients considering dental care abroad, focused on knowing who is treating you, having a clear treatment plan, and understanding follow-up care. It is worth reading alongside our safety guide before you book.
