How to choose a country and clinic

Step 1 — Define exactly what you need

Before comparing anything, get clear on the treatment. Are you replacing a single tooth, several, or a whole arch? Do you want implants, veneers, crowns or a combination? A UK dentist's assessment or a panoramic x-ray gives you the baseline you need to compare quotes like for like — otherwise you risk comparing a bare implant in one country with a finished tooth in another.

Step 2 — Shortlist a country

Each destination has a personality. Weigh the four factors that matter most to you:

• Cost: Turkey is deepest (60–70% saving), Portugal shallowest (30–45%).
• Flight time: Poland and Hungary are about two hours; Turkey and Portugal a little under three to four.
• Accreditation density: Turkey has the most authorised by the Turkish Ministry of Health for international health tourism, UK-focused clinics.

Step 3 — Vet the clinic

Once you have a country, judge clinics on substance, not slick photography. Confirm national accreditation (in Turkey, the International Health Tourism Authorisation issued by the Turkish Ministry of Health and International Health Tourism authorisation) and that the treating dentist is individually registered. Ask which implant brand they use — a clinic that won't name it is a red flag. Establish the guarantee terms and, crucially, the aftercare: who do you contact from the UK if something needs adjusting? Step 4 — Compare quotes the right way

Get an itemised written quote from two or three clinics. Make sure each prices the finished tooth and lists what is included — consultation, surgery, abutments, final crowns, hotel, transfers. If you'd rather not hand your contact details to several clinics at once, lets you request and compare quotes anonymously, then approach only the clinic you choose.

Step 5 — Weigh value, not just price

The cheapest quote is rarely the right one. A clinic that is £200 cheaper but offers no real guarantee or aftercare is a false economy, because a failed implant abroad costs far more than the saving. Weight clinical results and guarantee highest, then accreditation, then aftercare and UK support, and only then price.

On guarantees, read carefully which one is being offered. The clinic's guarantee covers its own work; the implant manufacturer runs a separate programme that replaces the component rather than funding the treatment, and on most programmes it is registered to the treating clinic rather than to the patient. A brochure promising a "lifetime implant warranty" may be describing something you are not the holder of.
